Backpackers Workshop

The YouthSection team will 'participate' as well as 'facilitate'

A six-week ‘workshop’ with the YouthSection in Dornach. October 19 – November 30, 2009.

What is my question? How can I become the captain of my own ship? – the ‘master’ of my own schooling? Can learning be experienced as the space that lives between people?

During these six weeks we will come together to support one another’s questions and striving, as well as engage in practical initiatives.

How do we design our own educational landscape? How can we balance inner and outer work?

Each day will comprise of a morning and an afternoon session. The ‘form’ of our morning work will be sculpted out of our individual study questions and interests themselves.

These morning sessions will be ‘facilitated’ by YouthSection individual students and co-workers who are also working on their own study questions. Together we will become the architects of our own study program.

In the afternoons we will balance our morning sessions by engaging in practical work including YouthSection tasks, Goetheanum garden and maintenance projects, and other activities as they arise.

Evenings and weekends will be left open for free time, spontaneous events / initiatives, and for exploring what the Goetheanum and its surroundings have to offer.

The cost of the 'Backpackers Workshop’ will be kept to an absolute minimum. Please note that places are limited. The main language will be English (additional deepening work will be possible in German and Norwegian).

Backpackers application form, including pricing information (Word doc.)

On the 'workshop':

Guy Collins

I imagine transformed, the questioning of the school of Athens, the activity of a craftsman’s work-village, an open university where a community of individuals allows a process of metamorphoses to reveal the roles and skills that each unique person carries. We all have something to offer to this workbench, this artwork, this science called life. I imagine a school where the content is people, where learning is a two-way street, where the world can be re-formed, where a fairy tale can become true mystery. I imagine...

I have ten thousand questions – probably more (and I am so looking forward to having space to investigate these questions at the Backpackers Workshop!). It's about freedom and responsibility: who takes and gives both of these? It's about everyone being able to take on their freedom and their responsibility. It's about participating in shaping the places and spaces in which we live and work. It's a question of politics and globalisation and media and social activism and youth work and cooking and making a home and being a friend and lover and being human – truly and honestly, with grace.

John Stubley

How can we study and work with others in freedom and in community? Can we together fashion the new guilds, where we learn for the love of learning, and where we put what we've learned in the service of the world?

Katie Dobb

How can we create a space where we can learn with and from each other? How can we weave our individual strengths, talents and interests together to create a real learning community? How can we support one another? How can we sculpt with warmth?

Martin Stenius

I'm looking forward to a space where I can bring my own impulse and themes – where I can learn to become concious on many levels, such as studying, working, my own inner development and in relationship to others in social processes.

Silvia Zuur

I hold questions, I hold pictures, and now I am going to share holding a space. I see this space as an unlimited expanding blackboard, wrapped around me and standing ready for my life’s learning, standing ready for your pictures and thoughts, standing ready for us to be creative together. Together we will create our own study books, one experiential page at a time. But my answer will only be as good as your question, and your answers will develop my questions furthur. I look forward to helping hold a space, where creatively together we can find answers in the space between us.
