'The Search for Humanity in Contemporary Art'

Over the last century the idea of what art is has grown to huge and elusive dimensions.  It is so large that it seems to encompass everything.  It’s all encompassing impression leaves us with no distinct sense for what it is.

 

It is certain that there is no simple way to come to terms with contemporary art.  There is a way to approach this towering and elusive entity which reveals it in a new light, with a face of humanity and a heart.  We see in this face aspirations, struggles, discoveries and defeats and it effects us in a singular fashion.  It places us with solidity and gravity into the life of our specific moment, and ourselves.  We wrestle our way to this face through the creative roots of things, through Spiritual Science, a way of knowing which enters the foundations of the world and humanity.

 

Our efforts cannot end in a static knowledge, a definition of a state of being, we come to the struggle of our time and find within this struggle living and vital inspirations toward health and new culture.

 

This conference will have two parts. The first two days, August 13-15, is open to artists and non-artists.  Through exhibitions, performances, talks and discussions, we will explore and celebrate the arts as a spiritual path for our evolving humanity. What does it mean to be fully human? What role can the arts play in developing our human potential?  The second part of the conference, August 15 -17, is for practicing artists. In this context, we will work artistically together, look at contemporary art including our own, and engage in conversations about the spiritual challenges and potentials of creating art in our time.

 

Cost: Suggested donation for both part one and two of the conference is $100-150; part one only is $65-120, and part two only is a $40 materials fee.
